We headed out by 8 a.m. on Monday morning to start the long drive home. I took some pictures of the rocky road that lead to the cabin on our way out. When we told the cavern park ranger where we were staying, he said in his strong accent, “That’s where we call, the Boondocks!”
Yep. Definitely the boondocks.
A deserted barn -
Lots and lots of trailers, metal, etc. -
A lot of these pictures aren’t great because I was taking them from the car as Ben was driving. After a while, there was a truck following behind us and I started to worry that they might not like me taking pictures…
I found it interesting that a lot of these homes were in somewhat sad shape, but they had satellite -
There were lots of tires…
Junkyard full of cars -
Soon we were back on the highway and driving through the Ozarks. Eli got queasy but didn’t throw up (again).
Charlie took a morning nap, which was so pleasant. But it was the only nap he took on that longggggggg day. We drove to St. Louis with the plan that we would stop at the zoo for an hour so the kids could run around and stretch their legs. Just as we got into the parking lot, it started to thunderstorm. We had waited a long time to get into that darn parking lot, so we grabbed our umbrella and headed into the zoo anyway.
I didn’t take a ton of pictures since it was raining, but the boys had fun seeing flamingos, penguins, bears, etc. It was SO HUMID because of the rain, which made everything sticky and smelly. After being cold all winter long, it’s kind of a shock to experience those hot temperatures with high humidity again. I’m not a big fan of the wet people smell! It was still good to have a place to stop and give the kids a place to roam (thanks Saralyn for getting us in!).
Then we hopped back in the car and drove the rest of the way home, arriving at 9:30 p.m. with the last hour being especially difficult – Charlie was beside himself from being in the car for so long and being up so late. And it was thundering and lightning. We were all SO happy to finally get home!
It was great spending time with Caleb, Elizabeth, Sofia and Caleb and taking such a unique road trip as a family!

okay so I just read about your ENTIRE trip and it was fun. I like reading the little clips about each of the pics. It looks really beautiful and it is cool you guys are so adventurous to go rafting too. I like that. The cavern looked cool too. The pics were great. I feel like I almost went to arkansas. :) Great update and really didn't seem long at all to me. :)
